Sepsis Scenario

You are called to a 82-year-old female residing in a local care home. Staff have called 999 as they are concerned about the patient’s reduced mobility, increasing confusion, and poor oral intake over the last 24–48 hours. On arrival, the patient is still in bed even though it is just after midday. She is rousable, but you are unable to obtain much information from her as she is quite confused. Her carers note that she has had a temperature today, but they are unsure of the cause.
