Sickle Cell Scenario

You are called to a 21-year-old female in severe pain. She states to the 999-call handler she has sickle cell disease and it has suddenly got worse again. As you arrive the patient looks in immense pain, but she still apologises for calling as she is normally pretty good at managing her symptoms. She recently has been struggling with a chest infection which hasn’t been getting better and seems to have exacerbated her sickle cell symptoms. Her usual pain medication doesn’t seem to be helping on this episode.
